Insta-Pot Dhal

  • Instant Pot or Pressure Pot
  • Dhal Ghutney/Swivel Stick, Whisk or Hand Blender
  • Small pot

Ingredients
  

  • 2 cups Yellow Split Peas, soaked
  • 1 White Onion,diced
  • 3 Wriwri Pepper or Green Chilli
  • 1 Cinnamon Stick
  • 1 tbspn Olive Oil
  • Salt
  • Turmeric
  • Black Pepper
  • 8 cups Water
  • 5-7 Garlic cloves, thinly sliced
  • 2 tbsp Whole Geera (Cumin) seeds

Instructions
 

  • In a large bowl, rinse yellow split peas till water runs clear. Then cover with water and allow peas to soak for at least 30mins
  • While peas are soaking, thinly slice onion and pepper
  • With InstaPot set to saute, allow oil to heat and begin to saute cinnamon stick with onion and pepper
  • Rinse and drain peas, add to pot and saute for 3-5 mins. Season with salt, black pepper and turmeric
  • Cancel saute mode on Instapot, pour over water and seal pot with lid
  • Set pot to pressure for 23 mins. After 23 minutes, timer will buzz. Turn off pot and allow InstantPot to slow release, indicator on lid will drop to allow lid removal
  • Open lid and vigorously swivel the dhal till smooth, taste for salt and adjust as needed
  • Thinly slice garlic cloves and add to small pot of oil with Geera (Cumin) seeds, Fry till fragrant, garlic and geera should turn a darken and slightly burn
  • In one swift motion, tip the small pot of oil, geera and garlic upside down into Dhal. Cover and allow tempered mixture to infuse dhal for 1-3 minutes
  • Stir and garnish with thinly sliced scallion or cilantro
